gotta keep the pesky elves.....

most of the Christmas decorations have been tucked away in boxes... i do however always keep some up as i have always been told that it brings bad luck on a home if they are all taken down before the twelfth night.... no doubt i am just a superstitious ninny, but after the year we have just had we thought it better to be on the safe side....

however
i just could not, and will not (if you are reading this my dearest other half), tuck my pesky elves away

i
just
love
them

they have made this corner of the kitchen a delight!

they look splendid sat on top of the piano nestled amongst the wood trees....

i shall fight for the right to keep them around for as long as i enjoy passing by and smiling at them - for what is the point of being in a kitchen and not having something to smile at?

... and for those that have asked.....

ta da!!

one fully assembled and working spinning wheel
yes he cursed a great deal whilst putting it together but i do believe it was worth the agony...
i just need to wax it to protect the wood and then a very kind local lass has agreed to come here and teach me the magical ways of spinning....
i am very, very excited about it but have to confess that i am slightly more excited that i have found a place to ride horses again - been awhile since i last sat upon a horse so i am hoping for a little guidance and a little good luck ...

until tomorrow..

Love the elves... yes, keep them! (I have my elves up by my bed, along with a Santa who is NOT going into a mice-friendly garage ever ever EVER!)
As for the spinning wheel,.... have you ever seen the episode of the Good Life where Margot gets a wheel & Tom gets a sheep in anticipation, only for it to be an ornamental one? Funny, really funny. Enjoy the wheel!

Why is it bad luck to leave the decorations up after Twelfth Night?

Long ago it was thought that leaving the decorations up would cause a disaster. People believed that tree-spirits lived in the greenery (holy, ivy etc) they decorated their houses with. The greenery was brought into the house to provide a safe haven for the tree-spirits during the harsh midwinter days. Once this period was over it was necessary to return the greenery back outside to release the tree-spirits into the countryside once again. Failure to do this would mean that vegetation would not be able to start growing again (spring would not return), leading to an agricultural disaster.

It was also thought that, if you left the greenery in the house, the tree-spirits would cause mischief in the house until they were released. visit projectbritain.com for more information

I love your elves and agree that it would be a very sad corner without them.... they really finish it off well. I will be keeping some of my fairy lights out this year as I just love the way they light up the kitchen....
I had a go at spinning when I was at college... it was so therapeutic... you'll love it!!

The spinning wheel looks just fab - all ready to go! I would keep those elves around for as long as you like - I reckon they are 'lucky' elves!!

As for the horse riding - great that you've found somewhere - I took up riding again a couple of years ago (after a 30 yr break!) and its been wonderful. Can't wait to hear about it!

Definitely keep the elves. We usually end up leaving some more fairy lights up every year.

Oh yes, keep your elves out as long as you want! I have one nativity that I inherited from my MIL and she kept in out all year long. So I do too. It's blue and matches my walls and just seems to fit where it is, no matter the season.
